How to Season Cast Iron with Tallow: A Step by Step Guide
How to season cast iron with a tallow seasoning stick
A well seasoned cast iron pan doesn't need complicated care. Our Cast Iron Seasoning Stick combines grass-fed beef tallow, beeswax, and rosemary extract in a solid, easy to apply form, with no seed oils and no petroleum.
Step 1. Start with a clean, dry, cool pan
Wash the pan if it needs it, then dry it thoroughly. Let it cool completely before you apply anything.
Step 2. Apply a thin coat
Glide the stick over the cooking surface, the sides, and the exterior. You don't need much. A thin, even layer is better than a heavy coat.
Step 3. Buff away the excess
Use a lint free cloth or a clean coffee filter to spread the coating evenly and buff off any excess until the pan looks almost dry. If it looks greasy, you've left too much on.
Step 4. Bake it on
Place the pan upside down in an oven preheated to 400°F and leave it for about one hour. Set a baking sheet or a piece of foil on the rack below to catch any drips.
Step 5. Let it cool, then repeat
Turn off the oven and let the pan cool completely before taking it out. Repeat the process 3 to 4 times for the best finish, until the pan has a smooth, even coating.
Keeping it seasoned
Seasoning builds over time. Cook with your pan often, clean it gently, dry it right away, and add a fresh thin coat whenever the surface starts to look dull or dry.
Caring for the stick
Store it somewhere cool with the cap on. Like any natural fat and wax balm, it can soften in a hot car or right next to the stove.
A clean pan, a thin coat, and consistent use. That's all it takes.
